Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Sgùrr a' Fionn Choire, which translates as the 'Peak of the Fair Corrie'. It overlooks the high stony cirque of the Fionn Choire, which serves as the most popular approach for walkers ascending from Sligachan.
  • Although classified as a Munro Top of Bruach na Frithe, the summit offers a more intimate and intimidating perspective of the ridge’s architecture, specifically the dark, vertical walls of Am Basteir and the leaning monolith of the Bhasteir Tooth.
  • The summit consists of incredibly abrasive gabbro rock. This provides such reliable friction that walkers can often tackle the moderate scrambling required to reach the top with far more confidence than the greasy basalt found on other Skye peaks.
  • The view to the east looks directly down into the depths of Lota Corrie, while looking north provides a clear sightline across the Sligachan glen to the rounded, reddish peaks of Glamaig and the Red Cuillin.
  • It is a peak frequently 'bagged' by those who have reached the ridge and realised that, having already endured the scree of the Fionn Choire, skipping a three-thousand-foot summit only a few hundred metres away would be an act of unnecessary restraint.
