Pike Fell

Tucked away in the Roxburgh hills, this 499m Hump offers a quintessential Southern Uplands experience. The ascent through rough moorland is rewarded by a lonely summit trig pillar. From here, you’ll find clear views across to the massive bulk of Cauldcleuch Head and the rolling silhouettes of the Cheviot Hills.

• •The name is a linguistic hybrid typical of the Border country, combining the Old English 'pic' (a pointed hill) with the Old Norse 'fjall' (mountain or fell).
• •It sits on the high ground between Teviothead and Hermitage Water, often climbed as part of a longer, boggy traverse to reach its higher neighbour, Cauldcleuch Head.
• •The summit is marked by a lone Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar, which provides a welcome fixed point for navigation in the disorienting mists that frequently roll over these grassy tops.
• •This landscape was once the heart of the 'Middle March,' where Border Reivers such as the Elliots and Armstrongs used these high ridges to drive stolen cattle between the hidden valleys of Liddesdale and Teviotdale.
