About Ord Ban

A pint-sized powerhouse of the Rothiemurchus forest, Ord Ban is a rare limestone outlier in a sea of granite. It offers high-definition views of Loch an Eilein’s castle without the need for an oxygen tank or a complete existential crisis on the high plateaus.

Did You Know?

  • Ord Ban is a geological oddity in the Cairngorms, consisting of Dalradian limestone rather than the region's ubiquitous granite. This unique alkaline soil supports a lush variety of orchids and wildflowers that would look entirely out of place on the neighboring barren summits.
  • The hill's name translates from Gaelic as 'The White Hill,' referring to the pale limestone crags that occasionally break through its thick cloak of Scots Pine. It has long served as the perfect natural grandstand for overlooking the ancient Rothiemurchus estate.
  • In the 19th century, the limestone here was more than just a scenic feature; it was quarried and burnt in local kilns to produce lime for agricultural use. Traces of these old industrial workings can still be found hidden amongst the heather on its lower slopes.
  • The summit provides what many landscape photographers consider the finest low-level view in Scotland. It perfectly frames the 13th-century island castle of Loch an Eilein against the dramatic, crumbling cliffs of the Sgoran Dubh massif.
  • It is the premier destination for hikers who realize three hours too late that they've forgotten their map, compass, and sense of adventure. It offers a spectacular 'I climbed a mountain' feeling while remaining within a very short sprint of the cake shops in Aviemore.
