About Na Maoilean

Overlooking the southern end of Loch Lochy, this rounded Marilyn offers a manageable but rewarding ascent through the managed forests near Spean Bridge. While modest in height, its isolated position provides a strategic grandstand view across the Great Glen and toward the imposing northern ramparts of the Ben Nevis range.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Na Maoilean', which translates as 'the bleak, rounded tops', a fitting description for the heather-clad, undulating plateau that crowns the hill.
  • Though much of the lower slopes are covered in commercial forestry, the summit sits clear of the treeline, offering a distinct perspective of the Grey Corries and the Great Glen Fault as it carves through the landscape.
  • The hill is often approached from the forest tracks near Clunes, making it a common detour for those walking sections of the Great Glen Way who want to gain some height and perspective on the lochs below.
  • Because it is classified as a Marilyn—meaning it has at least 150 metres of prominence—the views from the top feel much 'bigger' than the 352-metre elevation might suggest.
  • It is the perfect choice for a day when the West Highland weather is too foul for the high peaks; you get a genuine summit and a view while the Munro-bashers are seeing nothing but inside a cloud.
