About Lowther Hill

Dominating the skyline above Scotland’s highest villages, this smooth, grass-clad Donald is unmistakable thanks to the large radar dome at its summit. While a tarmac service road offers a straightforward ascent from Wanlockhead, the broad views across the Southern Uplands toward the Galloway Forest Park remain impressively wild.

Geology
Under your boots lies the Portpatrick Formation, made of a gritty sandstone that formed from layers of sediment on an ancient ocean floor.

Did You Know?

  • •The name likely stems from the Cumbric or Old Welsh word llwyd, meaning grey, or lled, meaning broad. This reflects the ancient Brittonic language spoken in the Kingdom of Strathclyde before the regional shift to Scots and Gaelic.
  • •The summit is topped by a large, white radome operated by National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which tracks aircraft across the flight paths of northern Britain. This golf ball is a major regional landmark visible from the M74 motorway.
  • •Lowther Hill sits directly between Wanlockhead and Leadhills, Scotland's two highest villages. The Southern Upland Way, Britain’s first official coast-to-coast long-distance footpath, passes directly over the shoulder of the hill near the summit.
  • •From the 725m summit, walkers can look across the deep valley of the Daer Water to the massive bulk of Culter Fell, while the distinctive profile of the Galloway Hills is visible to the southwest.
  • •Despite its significant height, the presence of a paved access road means this is one of the few summits in Scotland where you might be overtaken by a maintenance technician in a small van.
