Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scots word 'Law', meaning a conical hill, combined with the Gaelic 'Leargaidh', which translates to 'the hillside' or 'the slope'.
  • Geologically, the hill is the eroded remains of a volcanic vent from the Carboniferous period, making it a northern cousin to the similar volcanic outcrops found across the water in East Lothian.
  • The summit features two large prehistoric burial cairns; the larger one is known as the 'Norrie's Law' type, though the actual Norrie's Law hoard was found a few miles to the north.
  • The panoramic view from the top is exceptionally broad for its height, stretching from the Forth Bridges in the west to the distant peaks of Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi on the Highland horizon.
  • Local folklore once claimed a gold mine was hidden on the hill, guarded by a ghost who would only reveal the location to a person who could 'plough the Law' with a team of oxen led by a specific type of bull.
  • While it falls ten metres short of 300, its isolation ensures it qualifies as a Marilyn, meaning it has at least 150 metres of prominence from any surrounding high ground.
