Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Old Norse Hellu-fjall, the name translates as 'hill of the flat rocks'. This refers to the mountain’s 'stepped' appearance, created by alternating layers of weathered volcanic rock that form distinctive horizontal terraces across its eastern face.
  • The mountain hosts a globally significant colony of Manx shearwaters. Approximately 100,000 pairs nest in high-altitude burrows; the birds spend their days at sea and return to the mountain only after dark, filling the night air with an eerie, rhythmic cackling.
  • The summit provides one of the finest perspectives in the Hebrides. Looking south, the ridgeline leads directly to the formidable spire of Askival, while to the north, the entire jagged profile of the Skye Cuillin is visible across the blue waters of the Sound of Rum.
  • The mountain's geology is so unique that it gave its name to a specific rock type. 'Allivalite'—a variety of anorthite-rich gabbro—was first described here and on neighbouring Askival, representing the crystal settling of an ancient magma chamber roughly 60 million years ago.
  • Navigating the Rum Cuillin requires a sturdy pair of legs and a patient mindset; a 'Rum mile' is a locally recognized unit of measurement known to feel significantly longer and more vertical than any mile encountered on the mainland.
