About Gulvain [Gaor Bheinn]

Dominating the skyline north of the Road to the Isles, this massive Y-shaped Munro requires a long, flat approach followed by a relentless climb. The reward is a high, narrow ridge connecting its twin summits, offering exceptional views over the rough bounds of Knoydart and the long reach of Loch Arkaig.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely derives from the Gaelic Gadhail Bheinn, meaning 'mountain of the hunting dogs', though an alternative translation as Gaothail Bheinn ('windy mountain') is equally fitting for its exposed, high-altitude ridge.
  • While classified as a single Munro, Gulvain is a sprawling mass with two distinct tops connected by a narrow, kilometre-long crest. The northern summit is the true high point, standing six metres taller than the southern top which hosts the trig pillar.
  • The standard approach involves a four-mile trek along the floor of Gleann Fionnlighe before the real climbing begins; many walkers use a bicycle for this section to save energy for the steep 800-metre ascent up the south ridge.
  • From the summit, the view north into the remote wilderness of Knoydart is exceptional, while looking south provides a perspective on the massive north face of Ben Nevis and the peaks of the Mamores.
  • The primary path up the south ridge is frequently indistinguishable from a stream bed; in wet weather, the distinction between hiking and wading becomes purely academic.
