About Greatmoor Hill

Rising near the head of Teviotdale, this rounded Borders dome falls just one metre short of Graham status. It offers a remote, often pathless experience across typical Southern Uplands terrain of grass and peat. Reaching the summit rewards walkers with a quiet perspective over the nearby Cauldcleuch Head and the Liddesdale hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a straightforward English description of the landscape, reflecting the extensive, peat-heavy 'great moor' that characterises this specific stretch of the Roxburgh uplands.
  • Standing at 599 metres, the hill is a notable 'near-miss' for peak baggers; it fails to qualify as a Graham by a single metre, though it remains a Marilyn due to its significant prominence over the surrounding terrain.
  • The hill sits on a primary watershed; northern rainfall feeds the River Teviot and the North Sea, while southern drainage flows into the Liddel Water and eventually the Solway Firth.
  • From the summit, the view is dominated by the massive, plateau-like form of Cauldcleuch Head to the south-west, while the distinctive triple-peaked silhouette of the Eildon Hills is often visible on the northern horizon.
  • It is the quintessential 'nearly' hill, proving that in the Scottish Borders, 100 centimetres is the exact distance between being a celebrated Graham and a quiet afternoon of solitude.
