Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'A' Gheallaig', which translates to 'the white place' or 'bright hill'. This likely refers to the presence of light-coloured quartz in the local granite or the way the summit catches the morning light.
  • The summit offers a unique perspective on the Royal Family's Scottish residence, providing a clear bird's-eye view of the Balmoral Estate and the 16th-century tower of Abergeldie Castle situated on the south bank of the River Dee.
  • Views from the trig point are exceptionally specific; looking south, the dark, precipitous cliffs of Lochnagar dominate the horizon, while to the northwest, the distinctive granite tors of Ben Avon are clearly visible across the Gairn valley.
  • The hill is frequently climbed via a network of well-maintained Land Rover tracks, which were originally developed to service the sporting estates that manage the surrounding moorland for grouse.
  • Despite its gentle appearance from the road, the plateau is vast enough that the transition from a sunny Deeside stroll to a navigational exercise in mist can happen with surprising speed.
