About Garleffin Fell

Tucked away in the South Ayrshire borderlands, this quiet Hump offers a classic Galloway experience of rough grass and forestry edges. Rising to 430 metres, its summit provides an excellent vantage point over the Duisk Valley, with the higher, craggier peaks of the Galloway Forest Park dominating the eastern horizon.

Did You Know?

  • The name is likely a hybrid of Gaelic and Old Norse; 'Garleffin' stems from 'leth-pheighinn', meaning a half-penny land—a traditional Scottish land division—while 'Fell' derives from the Norse 'fjall'.
  • It is frequently climbed as part of a southern ridge walk alongside Pinner Meaul, crossing the high moorland that separates the Water of Tig from the Duisk Valley.
  • The summit offers a specific, earned vista: looking west, the volcanic plug of Ailsa Craig stands out in the Firth of Clyde, while to the east, the 'Awful Hand' range and the Merrick define the skyline.
  • While its height might not trouble a mountaineer, the terrain underfoot ensures that every one of its 430 metres is earned through the medium of thick grass and characteristic Galloway peat.
