About Fuar Bheinn

Rising steeply above the western shores of Loch Linnhe, this rugged Corbett defines the wild character of the Ardgour 'Rough Bounds.' It offers a pathless, rocky ascent that feels significantly more alpine than its 766-metre height suggests, providing a remote, quiet alternative to the busier peaks found across the water in the Mamores.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Fuar Bheinn, translating simply as 'Cold Mountain.' This likely refers to its exposed coastal position, where the peak catches the full force of the prevailing winds moving inland from the Atlantic.
  • The hill is most frequently climbed as part of a demanding circuit with its higher neighbour, Creach Bheinn. This route traverses a high, undulating ridge made of ancient Lewisian gneiss, overlooking the deep waters of Loch Sunart.
  • From the summit, the view to the south is dominated by the mountains of Mull and the island’s lone Munro, Ben More, while to the east, the massive bulk of Ben Nevis and the peaks of Glencoe are clearly visible across the silver ribbon of Loch Linnhe.
  • Access usually requires taking the Corran Ferry from south of Fort William. This short crossing over the Corran Narrows acts as a psychological barrier for many walkers, ensuring the Ardgour hills remain far less crowded than their mainland counterparts.
  • The Ardgour 'Rough Bounds' are famous for a reason; if you find a stretch of level, dry ground on the lower slopes, you have likely wandered onto someone's driveway by mistake.
