About Dunslair Heights

Rising above the celebrated mountain bike trails of Glentress Forest, this rounded Moorfoot summit offers a quiet escape from the busy woods below. The climb through dense conifers eventually gives way to open, heathery slopes. The summit provides clear views down the Tweed Valley toward Peebles and the southern Manor Hills.

Did You Know?

  • While the lower slopes are famous for the world-class mountain bike trails of Glentress Forest, the summit itself remains a much quieter affair, typically reached by following forestry tracks until they emerge onto the open moor.
  • The name likely derives from the Gaelic Dùn, meaning fort, referencing the Iron Age hillfort remains located on the lower southern spurs of the hill overlooking Peebles.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for surveying the Tweed Valley; on a clear day, the distinctive triple peaks of the Eildon Hills are visible to the east, while the high plateau of Broad Law dominates the southern horizon.
  • Despite being just shy of the 2,000ft mark, its status as a Hump (a hill with a drop of at least 100 metres on all sides) ensures it feels like a distinct, standalone peak rather than a shoulder of the higher Moorfoot range.
  • You may occasionally find your summit solitude interrupted by a very determined mountain biker who has strayed significantly uphill from the 'Black' graded trails in the forest below.
