Dungavel Hill

Sitting just across the valley from its more famous neighbour, Tinto, this rounded Marilyn offers a quieter perspective of the Southern Uplands. Its grassy slopes rise above Wiston, providing a clear, unimpeded view of the Clyde Valley and the dramatic, scree-clad northern face of Tinto across the A702.

• •The name is likely a hybrid of the Gaelic Dùn (hill or fort) and the Cumbric Gafael (a holding or reach), reflecting the complex linguistic history of the Lanarkshire borders.
• •While the 'Tinto Tap' attracts thousands of walkers annually, Dungavel Hill remains a tranquil alternative; it is classified as a Marilyn, meaning it possesses a significant 150 metres of prominence despite its modest height.
• •The summit offers an unparalleled vantage point to study the massive Bronze Age cairn on Tinto’s summit and the higher, rolling profiles of Culter Fell and Gathersnow Hill to the south.
