About Dun Rig

As the highest point of the northern Manor Hills, this sprawling, peat-covered upland offers a classic Southern Uplands experience. While the ground can be heavy going, the summit rewards walkers with views across the Glensax Burn toward the three peaks of the Eildon Hills and the distant Pentlands.

Geology
Dun Rig is built on layers of a hard, muddy sandstone known as wacke, which forms the solid foundation of these rolling hills.

Did You Know?

  • •The name is a hybrid of the Gaelic dùn, meaning a fort or significant hill, and the Scots rig, referring to a prominent ridge or strip of high ground.
  • •Dun Rig is the historic county top of Selkirkshire, marking the highest point within the boundaries of the former Scottish county.
  • •The hill is the focal point of the Dun Rig Horseshoe, a celebrated high-level circuit from Peebles that traverses several smaller summits including Birkscairn Hill and Stake Law.
  • •From the summit, the view to the south extends deep into the heart of the Manor Hills, with the massive bulk of Broad Law visible beyond the Manor Water valley.
  • •The summit plateau is notorious for its sprawling network of peat hags; reaching the trig pillar with entirely dry boots is generally considered a minor navigational miracle.
