About Drummond Hill

Rising steeply above the north shore of Loch Tay, this long, forested ridge offers a quiet contrast to the rugged Munros nearby. While the summit is tucked away among the trees, established forest tracks lead to the superb Black Rock viewpoint, overlooking Kenmore and the expansive waters of the loch below.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'druim', meaning a ridge or a back, which accurately describes the hill’s long, whale-backed profile stretching along the Tay valley.
  • It is historically significant as the site of one of Scotland's first managed forests; Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy began large-scale planting here in the late 16th century to provide timber for the nearby Taymouth Castle estate.
  • While the true 460m summit is obscured by commercial timber, the lower Black Rock viewpoint provides a clear, framed vista of Kenmore village and the peaks of the Ben Lawers range to the west.
  • The hill is a known habitat for the Capercaillie, Scotland's largest and rarest grouse, which relies on the mature Scots pine and larch plantations found across these slopes.
  • Despite its status as a Marilyn, many walkers inadvertently skip the actual summit in favour of the Black Rock viewpoint, proving that a well-placed bench is often more attractive than ten extra metres of topographical prominence.
