About Craig Leven

At 230 metres, Craig Leven is less a mountain and more a gentle suggestion of one. Tucked near Brig o' Turk, it offers charming views of Loch Achray without the knee-crunching descent of its larger neighbours. Perfect for those who prefer their summits served with a side of afternoon tea.

Did You Know?

  • The hill sits within the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, a landscape famously romanticised by Sir Walter Scott in 'The Lady of the Lake'. It is a classic example of Trossachs topography, where craggy knolls hide among dense, atmospheric woodland.
  • Its proximity to the Black Water means the lower slopes are a known haven for red squirrels and the occasional pine marten. You are significantly more likely to spot a rare mammal here than a queue of selfie-taking tourists.
  • The nearby village of Brig o' Turk was a favourite haunt of the Pre-Raphaelite artists in the 19th century. John Ruskin famously spent a damp summer here, though he likely preferred the local hospitality to the modest, mossy height of Craig Leven.
  • Despite its lowly stature, the 'Craig' prefix denotes its rocky nature, being formed largely of Dalradian schist. It sounds geologically imposing, right up until you realise you can reach the top before your car engine has even properly cooled down.
  • The ascent is so brief that by the time you have adjusted your gaiters and double-checked your compass, you have already accidentally descended the other side. It is the perfect 'peak' for hikers who want the glory of a summit without the inconvenience of actually getting out of breath.
