About Carn na Ruabraich

Located south of Tomintoul within the gentler, heathery fringes of the Cairngorms, this rounded Tump offers a quieter alternative to the high plateaus. The terrain is typical of the Glen Livet estate—rolling moorland and peat hags—providing an expansive sense of isolation and clear lines of sight toward the massive tors of Ben Avon.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Càrn na Ruabraich, which likely translates to 'Cairn of the Red Slope', referencing the russet hues of the grasses and heather that blanket the hill.
  • The summit offers a distinct perspective of the Eastern Cairngorms, specifically looking across the upper reaches of the River Avon toward the sprawling mass of Beinn a' Bhuird.
  • The hill is a fine example of Cairngorm 'big country', where the distance between you and the nearest road is measured less in miles and more in the number of times you have to leap across a peat hag.
