About Carn Bhinnein

Rising as a sharp, rocky prow on the southwestern edge of the Càrn a' Gheòidh plateau, this Munro Top offers a dramatic contrast to the rounded moors nearby. Its steep-sided profile gives it a mountain character often lacking in the southern Mounth, providing a fine vantage point over Gleann Taitneach.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Càrn Bhinnein, which translates as the ‘stony hill of the pinnacle’. This refers to its unusually sharp, conical profile, which sets it apart from the generally rounded and mossy summits found elsewhere in the Mounth.
  • It serves as a rocky outpost for its parent Munro, Càrn a' Gheòidh. While the main summit is a broad, flat dome, Carn Bhinnein is much more defined, sitting atop steep crags that fall away into the head of Gleann Taitneach.
  • Looking west from the summit, the view across the deep glen reveals the remote southern faces of Beinn Iutharn Mhòr and An Sgarsoch, offering a perspective of the Grampians that feels far more isolated than the Glenshee approach suggests.
  • The hill is a popular addition for walkers completing the Glenshee Munros, providing a more rugged and visually interesting detour than the standard high-level plateau routes.
  • After the featureless, high-altitude plateau walk from the Glenshee ski lifts, the sudden appearance of Carn Bhinnein's actual rocky peak is often the first evidence walkers have that they haven't accidentally wandered onto a very large, wet golf course.
