Carn Ait

Tucked away in the wild country south of the Geldie Burn, this high heathery dome offers a true sense of Deeside isolation. Its broad, rounded slopes provide a silent vantage point over the empty glens that bridge the gap between Braemar and Atholl, providing a lonely alternative to the nearby Cairngorm giants.

• •The name is Gaelic, with Càrn meaning a stony hill; while the meaning of 'Ait' is debated, it is often associated with the remote 'place' or 'location' it occupies in the vast wilderness between regions.
• •Reaching the summit usually requires a long approach from the Linn of Dee, often involving a mountain bike to navigate the miles of track alongside the River Dee and Geldie Burn.
• •The summit provides a grandstand view of the 'remote twins', An Sgarsoch and Càrn an Fhidhleir, which sit directly to the west across the undulating moorland.
• •Given the miles of peat-hags and boggy ground required to reach it, the hill is most frequently visited by those who have either lost their way to a Munro or have run out of more accessible things to climb.
