About Camock Hill

Rising above the head of Glen Muick, this rounded Cairngorm summit offers a quieter alternative to the busy Munro paths nearby. Its broad, heather-clad slopes provide a rugged vantage point overlooking the dark waters of Loch Muick and the massive granite precipices of the Dubh Loch and Lochnagar.

You are walking on light-colored granite from the Glen Gairn Pluton. This solid foundation formed from a massive body of molten rock that cooled deep underground.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely stems from the Gaelic 'Camóg', meaning a little bend or hook, which may refer to the hill's curved profile when viewed from the Glen Muick approaches.
  • Situated on the high ground between Glen Muick and Glen Doll, the hill sits just off the historic Capel Mounth, an ancient drovers' route and right of way connecting Angus to Aberdeenshire.
  • From the summit, walkers have an excellent profile view of the White Mounth plateau, specifically the steep eastern crags of Broad Cairn and the sprawling southern flanks of the Lochnagar massif.
  • The hill is located within the Balmoral Estate, and its quiet slopes are a reliable place to spot red deer and mountain hares away from the more frequented tourist tracks.
  • While it easily clears the 2,000-foot mark, a lack of topographic prominence means it fails to make the more popular peak-bagging lists, usually ensuring you have the summit to yourself.
