About Cairn of Meadows

Rising above the head of Glen Muick near Ballater, this high heathery shoulder offers a quieter vantage point within the shadow of the Mounth's more famous Munros. Often overlooked by those heading for Broad Cairn, it provides an expansive perspective across the remote deer forests and the rugged cliffs of Lochnagar.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a literal English description of the flatter, grassy patches found amidst the high-altitude heather and peat hags of the Mounth plateau.
  • From its broad summit, walkers are treated to a clear view of the dramatic glacial trough containing the Dubh Loch, framed by the steep granite crags of Broad Cairn and the Eagles Craig.
  • The hill is situated on the Balmoral Estate, making it a prime location for spotting large herds of red deer, which frequent these high slopes during the summer months.
  • As a summit with very little prominence, it is the kind of peak where you may find yourself pacing back and forth in the mist, trying to decide which particular clump of moss represents the absolute highest point.
