About Buidhe Bheinn West Top

Rising steeply above the remote shores of Loch Hourn, this rugged summit offers a wilder alternative to the neighbouring Munros. The terrain is characteristically rough, featuring quartzite-strewn slopes and complex craggy outcrops. Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, where 'Buidhe' translates as yellow or golden and 'Bheinn' as mountain. This likely refers to the distinct hue of the grasses and deer hair sedge that cover the slopes, which turn a vibrant tawny gold during the autumn months.
  • This peak is the lower partner of the Buidhe Bheinn massif; for many years, hikers debated which of the two tops was the true summit until modern surveys confirmed the East Top is approximately six metres higher.
  • The summit offers a spectacular, direct view across Loch Hourn to the north face of Ladhar Bheinn, showcasing the full vertical scale of Knoydart’s highest mountain from sea level to peak.
  • The approach from the Kinloch Hourn road involves traversing some of the most pathless and demanding ground in the Highlands, where the lack of established trails requires sharp navigation among the rock steps.
  • Despite its modest height, the relentless 'up and down' nature of the ridgeline ensures your knees will finish the day under the firm impression that you have climbed something significantly taller.
