About Beinn Odhar

Standing as a sentinel above Tyndrum, this massive, steep-sided Corbett narrowly misses Munro status. Its grassy slopes rise sharply from the West Highland Way, offering a straightforward but taxing ascent. The broad summit provides a commanding perspective of the iconic peaked profile of Beinn Dorain and the sprawling Strathfillan valley below.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic, the name translates as 'dun-coloured mountain', likely describing the sallow, pale hue of the grasses and sedges that dominate its high slopes compared to the greener glens below.
  • The mountain’s history is tied to the Tyndrum lead mines, where miners once extracted galena from veins running through the quartz-mica schist; remains of these workings are still scattered along the lower western slopes.
  • Positioned between Tyndrum and the Bridge of Orchy, the summit offers an unmatched vantage point for studying the steep, 'stepped' eastern profile of the famous peaked neighbor, Beinn Dorain.
  • It serves as a significant landmark for West Highland Way hikers, who must circumnavigate its base for nearly five miles as they travel between the southern and northern Highlands.
  • Falling just 4.2 metres short of the 3,000ft Munro threshold, it is one of the tallest Corbetts in Scotland, providing all the physical challenge of its larger neighbors with significantly fewer crowds.
  • It missed out on Munro status by less than the height of a double-decker bus, making it an ideal peak for those who enjoy Munro-level exertion without the burden of any subsequent bragging rights.
