About Beinn Dearg Mor

Rising steeply from the heart of the Fisherfield Forest, this dramatic sandstone Corbett offers a sense of isolation rarely found elsewhere. Its tiered cliffs and sharp ridges provide a rugged ascent, rewarded by intimate views across to the jagged spires of An Teallach and the deep, dark waters of Loch na Sealga.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Dearg Mòr translates from Gaelic as the 'Great Red Hill'. This refers to the ancient Torridonian sandstone that forms its massive, tiered ramparts, which take on a deep, rust-coloured glow during a Northwest Highland sunset.
  • It forms a celebrated partnership with its neighbour, Beinn Dearg Bheag. The two hills are separated by the high pass of Bealach na h-Eiginn, and together they create one of the most distinctive skylines in the Dundonnell wilderness.
  • The summit offers an unparalleled look at the remote Munros to the south, but the most arresting sight is the immediate view north across the Strath na Sealga to the fortress-like walls and jagged pinnacles of An Teallach.
  • The approach usually involves passing the remote bothy at Shenavall. Hikers must be wary of the Abhainn Strath na Sealga; this river can rise rapidly and become a dangerous, impassable obstacle between the hill and the path home.
  • Given its remote location, it is the kind of hill where you are more likely to encounter a golden eagle than another human, which is fortunate, as you will likely be talking to yourself by the time you actually reach the base of it.
