About Beinn an Dothaidh

Often overlooked in favour of its elegant neighbour, Beinn Dòrain, this bulky Munro offers a more rugged experience. Rising steeply from the Bridge of Orchy, its three-pointed summit plateau provides exceptional views across the desolate expanse of Rannoch Moor and towards the remote peaks of the Ben Alder forest.

You are hiking over ancient sandstone and mudstone, transformed by heat and pressure. Look for tiny red garnet crystals embedded within these tough, layered rocks.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Hill of the Scorching' or 'Singeing.' This likely refers to the historical practice of Muirburn—burning old heather to encourage new growth for grazing—which was frequently carried out on these slopes.
  • Most walkers reach the summit via the steep, often boggy path into the high bealach shared with Beinn Dòrain, though it is also commonly linked with Beinn Achaladair to the northeast to create a classic high-level ridge walk.
  • While its southern slopes are primarily grassy, the mountain’s northern face holds Coire Daingean, a respected winter climbing venue that hosts technical routes ranging from Scottish Grade III to V.
  • The summit offers a spectacular vantage point for the West Highland Way and the West Highland Line; from the western cairn, you can watch the trains snaking around the Great Horseshoe Curve far below in the glen.
  • Despite being the taller of the two 'Bridge of Orchy hills,' it remains the perennial bridesmaid to Beinn Dòrain, largely because it lacks its neighbor's iconic, conical silhouette when viewed from the A82.
