• •For many years, this western top was officially mapped as the highest point of Beinn a' Chroin. It took a 1980s re-survey to demote it in favour of the eastern 941m summit, causing minor identity crises for veteran baggers.
• •The mountain's name translates from Gaelic as either the 'Hill of Danger' or 'Hill of the Cloven Hill'. Given the steep, rocky scramble required to gain the ridge from the north, 'Danger' feels like a very fair warning.
• •This peak forms part of the 'Crianlarich Five' or 'Seven' circuits. If you're tackling the whole lot in one go, the West Top is usually the point where your quadriceps begin drafting a formal resignation letter.
• •The ridge is composed of mica schist, which provides excellent grip for your boots in the sunshine. Unfortunately, in the rain, it acquires the consistency of a greased baking tray, making the descent a very dignified affair.
• •The summit ridge is a masterclass in psychological torture. It consists of so many lumps and bumps that you’ll experience approximately four 'victory moments' before realizing the real top is still several undulations away.
