About A' Ghlas-bheinn

Rising steeply above the Glen Licht house, this rugged Munro offers a more complex, rocky ascent than its bulky neighbor, Beinn Fhada. Its narrow summit ridge provides a fine vantage point overlooking the deep canyon of the Falls of Glomach and the salt waters of Loch Duich.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'The Grey-Green Hill'. This reflects the landscape of the Kintail forest, where steep, grassy slopes are frequently interrupted by outcrops of grey Lewisian gneiss and sandstone.
  • The hill is most commonly climbed from Morvich via the Bealach na Sgairne. This high pass served as a historic 'coffin road,' used for centuries by locals to transport the deceased from remote inland glens to the consecrated ground at Loch Duich.
  • While Beinn Fhada dominates the local skyline, the summit of A' Ghlas-bheinn provides a superior view into the wild, uninhabited interior of the North West Highlands, specifically looking toward the remote peaks of Mullach na Dheiragain.
  • The northern descent towards the Falls of Glomach is exceptionally steep; the falls themselves are among the highest in Britain, and the hill acts as a dramatic natural grandstand for the surrounding wilderness.
  • It is frequently relegated to the status of an 'add-on' for those climbing Beinn Fhada, a slight that the hill answers with a relentless, knee-straining 300-metre pull from the bealach that feels significantly longer than it looks on a map.
