Did You Know?

  • The name 'Longknowe' combines the Old English 'lang' with the Scots and Northern English 'knowe', a dialect term for a rounded hillock or knoll.
  • From this vantage point, the view is dominated by the steep northern flanks of Hedgehope Hill and the massive, peat-covered plateau of The Cheviot itself.
  • The summit area is characteristic of the Cheviot 'foothills', where the underlying volcanic andesite rock is softened by a thick layer of glacial till and hardy bent grass.
  • While technically the highest point of its immediate ridge, this Tump is frequently overlooked by walkers hurrying toward the more famous 2,000-foot peaks that tower over the valley.
