Did You Know?

  • The name 'Leeden' likely stems from the Old English word 'hlyde', meaning 'loud' or 'noisy', which is thought to refer to the sound of the River Walkham as it rushes through the deep valley at the foot of the tor.
  • The tor sits just above the trackbed of the old Plymouth & Dartmoor Railway. This nineteenth-century horse-drawn line was constructed to carry granite from the high moorland quarries down to the coast at Plymouth.
  • The summit offers a specific, celebrated view southwards to the sharp, conical profile of Sheeps Tor, which stands as a prominent landmark above the Burrator woods.
  • The western slopes of the hill are dotted with the remains of Bronze Age hut circles and prehistoric field boundaries, marking a period when the climate was warmer and the moor was a bustling agricultural community.
  • Its proximity to the B3212 road makes it one of the few places on Dartmoor where you can achieve a genuine sense of wilderness and a panoramic view while remaining within a ten-minute sprint of your car should the Atlantic weather turn.
