Laployd Plantation

Situated on the eastern fringes of Dartmoor, this wooded Tump offers a quiet escape through the dense forestry of its namesake plantation. Reaching just over 319 metres, the summit is tucked away amongst the trees near the Kennick and Tottiford reservoirs, providing a sheltered, atmospheric contrast to the open moorland further west.

• •The name likely stems from 'Leah' (Old English for a woodland clearing) combined with a local surname, though the hill's modern identity is entirely tied to the 20th-century commercial forestry that blankets its slopes.
• •The hill sits above the Victorian-engineered Tottiford Reservoir, which was the first of its kind to be built on Dartmoor in 1861 to supply water to the growing population of Torquay.
• •While the summit is largely shrouded by timber, the nearby granite outcrops of Blackingstone Rock and Heltor Rock offer the expansive views across the Teign Valley that the plantation canopy obscures.
• •The summit is so successfully camouflaged by commercial timber that you may find yourself checking your GPS more frequently than on the open moor, if only to confirm you have actually arrived.
