Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Latin 'innominatus', literally meaning 'without a name'. It was likely used by early 20th-century fell-walkers or surveyors to identify this specific high point on the complex, craggy plateau of Haystacks which lacked a traditional local title.
  • This peak overlooks Innominate Tarn, the final resting place of the famous guidebook author Alfred Wainwright. He requested that his ashes be scattered there, describing the surrounding landscape as the 'most beautiful heart' of the Lake District.
  • The summit offers a particularly clear perspective of the Great Doup and the North Face of Pillar. From here, the scale of Pillar Rock is clearly visible across the Ennerdale valley, a view often missed from the more crowded summits nearby.
  • The terrain is composed of Buttermere Rhyolite, resulting in a chaotic landscape of small crags and hidden hollows that can make navigation surprisingly tricky when the mist rolls in from the coast.
  • Standing on a peak whose name literally means 'unnamed' provides a rare opportunity to reach a summit that technically claims not to have one.
