About Kail Hill

Rising sharply above the village of Thorpe in Wharfedale, this distinctive limestone reef knoll offers a compact but rewarding climb. Its steep, grassy slopes contrast with the dark gritstone of nearby Thorpe Fell, providing excellent vantage points over the winding River Wharfe and the picturesque village of Burnsall.

Did You Know?

  • Geologically, the hill is a limestone reef knoll, a remnant of a 300-million-year-old coral reef that stands out prominently against the darker, heather-clad Millstone Grit moors nearby.
  • The summit provides an intimate look down into the 'hidden' village of Thorpe, once a thriving centre for shoemaking that was historically so secluded it was reputedly bypassed by the Black Death.
  • The view to the south-east is dominated by the gritstone edge of Burnsall Fell and the distinctive war memorial obelisk perched on the skyline of Cracoe Fell.
  • Sitting just three metres over the 300-metre mark, the hill is a minor overachiever, offering a panoramic perspective of the Southern Dales that belies its modest elevation.
