Hutton's Monument

Rising above the dramatic limestone cliffs of Giggleswick Scar, this modest summit offers an impressive vantage point over the Ribble Valley. The approach through ancient woodland leads to a plateau where a prominent stone cairn marks the top, providing clear views across to Smearsett Scar and the distinctive bulk of Pen-y-ghent.

• •The name commemorates John Hutton, a local vicar and schoolmaster from Giggleswick School in the late 18th century, who was an early enthusiast for the geology and history of the Yorkshire Dales.
• •Standing on the edge of the South Craven Fault, the hill provides a stark topographical contrast between the limestone uplands to the north and the lower gritstone landscapes of the Ribble Valley to the south.
• •The summit offers a clear, earned view of the 'Big Three' peaks' smaller neighbor, Smearsett Scar, as well as the sprawling Forest of Bowland to the west.
