About Green Bell

This broad, grassy dome at the eastern edge of the Howgill Fells offers a classic taste of the range’s velvet-smooth terrain. Easily reached from Ravenstonedale, the summit is marked by a trig pillar and provides an expansive, unobstructed outlook across the Eden Valley toward the North Pennines.

Did You Know?

  • The name is descriptive of its verdant, bell-shaped profile, a characteristic feature of the Howgill Fells, where the underlying Silurian rocks weather into smooth, steep-sided slopes rather than the craggy limestone found elsewhere in the Dales.
  • From the summit trig pillar, the view north is particularly sharp, looking across the patchwork fields of the Eden Valley to the massive North Pennine escarpment, where High Cup Nick and Cross Fell are clearly visible on a clear day.
  • The hill is the focal point of a popular circular walk from the village of Ravenstonedale, often paired with Randygill Top to take in the dramatic, curving ridges that overlook the deep scoop of Weasdale.
  • At 605 metres, it falls just five metres short of the 610-metre (2,000ft) requirement for Hewitt status, ensuring it remains a quieter destination than its higher neighbours further west.
  • The 'Green' in its name is an honest assessment of the terrain, though during a standard British summer, it might more accurately be described as a 'Saturated Sponge'.
