About Wandale Hill

Sitting quietly above the River Rawthey near Sedbergh, this grassy ridge offers a tranquil alternative to the popular Howgill Fells. Though modest in height, its position provides a grandstand view across the valley to the soaring cliffs of Cautley Crag and the massive, flat-topped bulk of Baugh Fell.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely stems from the Old Norse 'vǫndr', meaning a rod or wand, and 'dalr' for valley, suggesting a narrow dale or one marked by a specific boundary pole.
  • The summit offers a superb profile view of Cautley Spout, England’s highest above-ground waterfall, as it tumbles down the steep eastern face of the Howgills directly across the valley.
  • It serves as a natural divide between the River Rawthey and Wandale Beck, providing an easy-to-follow linear route for walkers heading north toward Wild Boar Fell.
  • While it qualifies as a Hump due to its hundred-metre prominence, its main role in local hillwalking is serving as a very quiet, sheep-grazed grandstand for looking at more famous neighbors.
