About Wendover Woods [Haddington Hill]

Tucked away within a busy Forestry England site, this wooded plateau marks the highest point in the Chiltern Hills. The summit is less a dramatic peak and more a gentle rise among the evergreens, conveniently located near a café and marked by a commemorative stone amidst a network of popular trails.

Did You Know?

  • The name Haddington is derived from Old English, likely meaning 'the hill of Hadda’s people'. Wendover refers to 'white waters', a nod to the chalk-clear streams that flow from the base of the escarpment.
  • During the First World War, the woods served as a training ground for soldiers from nearby Halton Camp. Recruits dug practice trenches in the chalky soil, the indented remains of which can still be identified by keen-eyed walkers away from the main tracks.
  • Despite its modest stature and wooded character, it is classified as a Marilyn. This indicates a prominence of at least 150 metres, making it a significant topographical feature in the context of the Home Counties.
  • The most expansive views are found by following the Firecrest Trail to the northern edge of the woods. From this vantage point, the Aylesbury Vale opens up, with the Boer War monument on the neighbouring Coombe Hill visible to the southwest.
  • Finding the summit stone often feels less like an act of mountaineering and more like a game of hide-and-seek, as it sits quietly near the café, frequently bypassed by visitors more interested in the nearby playground.
