About East Meur Gorm Craig

Tucked away on the eastern skirts of Beinn a' Bhùird, this Munro Top offers front-row seats to the spectacular rock architecture of Corrie na Cìche. It's a high-altitude granite playground for those who find the main plateau just a little too crowded and sensible for their liking.

Did You Know?

  • It overlooks the legendary 'Snake Ridge' in Corrie na Cìche, which is one of the most famous classic rock climbs in the Cairngorms. The scale of the granite cliffs dropping into the corrie below is enough to make even the hardiest hiker's knees feel slightly liquid.
  • Geologically, this fell is part of the massive Cairngorms batholith, a giant lump of granite that bubbled up 400 million years ago. It has spent the last few millennia being patiently carved into its current dramatic shape by the slow, grinding movement of passing glaciers.
  • At 935 meters, it comfortably clears the 3,000-foot hurdle for Munro status. However, because it lacks sufficient prominence from its parent peak, Beinn a' Bhùird, it remains classified as a 'Top,' which is the mountaineering equivalent of being a perpetual bridesmaid.
  • The name translates from Gaelic as the 'East Branch of the Blue Crag,' a poetic description of the granite's hue in specific lighting. In reality, under the usual heavy Scottish cloud cover, the color is usually more of a 'persistent and very damp charcoal.'
  • On a misty day, the flat plateau nearby is so featureless that your compass becomes your only reliable friend. If you find yourself trying to start a conversation with a ptarmigan to ask for directions to Braemar, you’ve officially reached peak Cairngorm desperation.
