About Dillicar Knott

Perched above the dramatic Lune Gorge near Sedbergh, this modest grassy outlier offers a grandstand view of the West Coast Main Line and M6 motorway. Though low in stature, it provides a quiet, breezy vantage point to watch the traffic far below against the steep, velvet flanks of the Howgill Fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Knott' is a common Cumbrian term derived from the Old Norse 'knutr', meaning a hard, rocky hillock or mound.
  • Though excluded from Alfred Wainwright’s famous seven volumes, the hill is classified as a Synge, having been included in Tim Synge’s comprehensive guide to the Lake District fells.
  • The summit provides one of the best perspectives on the Lune Gorge, a narrow geological bottleneck where the River Lune, the railway, and the motorway are forced into a tight parallel line between the Lake District and the Howgills.
  • From the top, walkers can look directly across the valley to the massive, rounded profiles of Grayrigg Forest and Blease Fell, which mark the western edge of the Howgill Fells.
  • Despite being overlooked by tens of thousands of motorists every day as they pass through the gorge, the summit remains remarkably solitary, seeing more sheep than human visitors in a typical week.
