About Uldale Head
Tucked away in the Howgill Fells near Sedbergh, this rounded, grassy dome offers a quieter alternative to the central summits. Rising steeply above the remote Uldale valley, the summit provides a sense of isolation and expansive views toward the higher ridges of The Calf and Bush Howe.

Did You Know?
- •The name derives from the Old Norse 'ulfr' (wolf) and 'dalr' (valley), marking the area as the 'valley of the wolf'—a testament to the wild nature of these fells before they were cleared for sheep grazing.
- •The summit offers an excellent vantage point across the deep, glacial trench of Uldale towards the neighbouring Hand Lake and the dramatic, craggy gills of the western Howgills.
- •Uldale Head forms part of the northern rim of the fells; walkers often approach it from the north via the quiet village of Ravenstonedale or as part of a long ridge loop starting from Sedbergh.
- •The terrain is quintessential Howgill Fell—smooth, steep, and covered in a thick carpet of grass that makes for easy walking in the dry but can feel like a vertical ice rink after a heavy Cumbrian downpour.
