About Carn Aosda

Located above the Glenshee Ski Centre, this is one of Scotland's most accessible Munros. While the ascent is largely defined by gravel tracks and ski infrastructure, the summit offers a fast, high-altitude vantage point. It provides a stark contrast between the industrialised hillside and the wild, rolling plateaus of the Mounth.

Did You Know?

  • The name stems from the Gaelic Càrn Aosda, typically translated as 'Ancient Cairn' or 'Hill of the Aged'. It is a curious title for a mountain, potentially suggesting the summit was a site of ancient significance or a landmark on an old trans-Grampian route.
  • Rising from the 670-metre summit of the Cairnwell Pass, the vertical ascent from the car park is just under 250 metres. This makes it a popular choice for short winter days or for those looking to reach a 3,000ft summit with minimal physical effort.
  • Despite the presence of ski tows, the summit offers an excellent north-facing view toward the high peaks of the Cairngorms. On a clear day, the granite tors of Ben Avon and the massive plateau of Beinn a' Bhùird are clearly visible across the deep valley of the River Dee.
  • The hill forms the northern end of a high-altitude ridge that connects to The Cairnwell and Creag Leacach. This trio is frequently climbed together, allowing walkers to bag three Munros while remaining above the 800-metre contour for most of the walk.
  • For many hillwalkers, the greatest challenge on Carn Aosda isn't the terrain or the weather, but the aesthetic struggle of trying to take a summit photograph that doesn't feature a ski lift, a snow fence, or a bulldozed track.
