About Brown Willy

Rising as the highest point in Cornwall, this distinctive granite ridge offers a rugged, often marshy ascent typical of Bodmin Moor. The summit features prehistoric cairns and provides sweeping views across to neighboring Rough Tor. It is a quintessential moorland walk, feeling significantly wilder than its modest 420-metre elevation suggests.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a corruption of the Cornish 'Bronn Wennili', which translates to 'Hill of Swallows'. Despite modern phonetic interpretations, the name refers to the birds that frequent the moor rather than anything anatomical.
  • The summit ridge is crowned by several Bronze Age cairns. The largest of these is a 'platform cairn' at the northern end, suggesting the hill has been a site of ceremonial or spiritual importance for over 3,000 years.
  • Meteorologists frequently refer to the 'Brown Willy Effect'. This occurs when the hill triggers a line of convergence in the atmosphere, creating a narrow band of intense rainfall that can stretch for over 50 miles across Devon and Somerset.
  • The panoramic view from the top spans the width of the peninsula; on a clear day, you can see the Atlantic breakers near Tintagel to the north and the calmer waters of the English Channel to the south.
  • While it holds the title of Cornwall’s highest peak, many walkers find the climb slightly underwhelming compared to its neighbor, Rough Tor, which looks far more impressive but is actually 21 metres shorter.
