• •The name is a corruption of the Cornish 'Bronn Wennili', which translates to 'Hill of Swallows'. Despite modern phonetic interpretations, the name refers to the birds that frequent the moor rather than anything anatomical.
• •The summit ridge is crowned by several Bronze Age cairns. The largest of these is a 'platform cairn' at the northern end, suggesting the hill has been a site of ceremonial or spiritual importance for over 3,000 years.
• •Meteorologists frequently refer to the 'Brown Willy Effect'. This occurs when the hill triggers a line of convergence in the atmosphere, creating a narrow band of intense rainfall that can stretch for over 50 miles across Devon and Somerset.
