About Breabag

This sprawling limestone and quartzite Corbett offers a rougher, more secluded experience than its famous Assynt neighbours. While many visitors stop at the Bone Caves on its lower western slopes, the broad summit plateau provides an exceptional vantage point for the iconic profiles of Suilven, Canisp, and Ben More Assynt.

Did You Know?

  • The name Breabag is derived from the Gaelic Brèabag, which translates to 'the little kick.' This likely refers to the abrupt, stepped nature of its limestone and quartzite terraces or the physical 'kick' required to navigate its uneven, rocky surface.
  • The western slopes are home to the famous Bone Caves of Inchnadamph. Excavations here discovered the remains of species long extinct in Britain, including Eurasian lynx, brown bear, Arctic fox, and even polar bear, dating back to the last Ice Age.
  • This hill is a cornerstone of the Moine Thrust Zone, where geologists first understood how tectonic forces could slide older rocks over younger ones. The contrast between the grey Durness limestone on the lower slopes and the pale Cambrian quartzite higher up is stark.
  • From the summit, the view west is dominated by the unmistakable, isolated 'islands' of Assynt: Suilven, Canisp, and Stac Pollaidh appear as dark monoliths rising from the watery moorland of the Inverpolly Forest.
  • Navigating the summit plateau is less of a walk and more of an extended exercise in balance, as the ground is almost entirely composed of loose, ankle-hungry quartzite blocks that seem specifically designed to ruin a good pair of boots.
