About Beinn an Fhuarain

Sitting amidst the distinctive limestone landscape of Assynt, this heather-topped hill offers a rugged but accessible vantage point. Its summit provides an intimate perspective on the great Torridonian sandstone icons of Suilven and Canisp, while looking north reveals the long, fractured ridge of Ben More Assynt and Conival.

Did You Know?

  • The Gaelic name translates to 'Hill of the Spring', a fitting title given the complex hydrology of the surrounding limestone plateau where streams often vanish into sinkholes only to reappear at the hill's base.
  • The hill overlooks the approach to the Bone Caves of the Allt nan Uamh, a site of significant archaeological importance where the remains of lynx, brown bear, and reindeer have been discovered, dating back over 10,000 years.
  • The summit offers a clear view of the Moine Thrust, a geological phenomenon where ancient metamorphic rocks were pushed 100 kilometres over younger strata, making it a key site within the North West Highlands Geopark.
  • While often overlooked in favour of the nearby 900-metre peaks, it earns its status as a Hump (Hundred Metre Prominence) by standing distinct from the higher mass of Breabag to the east.
  • The boggy eastern flanks are particularly effective at keeping the summit quiet, ensuring that the local red deer population remains significantly larger than the population of visiting hillwalkers.
