About Bowscale Fell Far East Top

Rising above Mungrisdale, this modest subsidiary summit of Bowscale Fell offers a quiet alternative to the main peak. The terrain is largely grassy and smooth, typical of the Northern Fells. It provides an excellent vantage point looking down into the Glenderamackin valley and across to the sharp profile of Souther Fell.

Did You Know?

  • The name Bowscale stems from the Old Norse 'skali', meaning a temporary hut or shelter, likely used by Viking-age shepherds grazing their flocks in these high northern pastures.
  • This summit is classified as a Synge, a list created by Timothy Synge in 1995 to identify Lake District tops with at least 15 metres of prominence that were missed by Alfred Wainwright.
  • The ascent from Mungrisdale via this ridge offers a bird's-eye view of the River Glenderamackin as it curves around the base of the fell toward the hamlet of Scalegill.
  • From this vantage point, the northern slopes of Carrock Fell appear particularly imposing, revealing the site of the ancient hillfort that crowns its summit across the valley.
  • Despite its somewhat grand title, the 'Far East Top' is less a mountain peak and more a final, grassy pause for breath before the steep descent to the pub in Mungrisdale.
