About Ben Reoch

This grassy Luss Hill rises steeply above Tarbet, offering a quieter alternative to the busier Arrochar peaks. Though the ascent is often pathless and characteristically boggy, the summit provides an exceptional, close-quarters perspective of Ben Lomond and the distinctive jagged silhouette of The Cobbler across Loch Long.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn Riabhach', meaning 'brindled' or 'grizzled hill', referring to the mottled appearance of its slopes where grass, heather, and rocky outcrops mingle.
  • It is frequently climbed as part of a ridge traverse with its southern neighbour, Beinn Bhreac, offering a rugged route that separates the freshwater of Loch Lomond from the saltwater of Loch Long.
  • The summit offers a unique vantage point over the narrow isthmus at Tarbet, where less than two miles of land prevents Loch Lomond from meeting the sea.
  • Despite its modest height, the terrain's impressive ability to retain water ensures that your boots will almost certainly be heavier at the summit than they were at the start.
