About Ben Oss

Tucked away southwest of Tyndrum, this mica schist Munro offers a rugged contrast to its bulkier neighbour, Beinn Dubhchraig. While often climbed as a pair, its sharp, craggy profile and rocky terrain give it a distinct character. The summit rewards walkers with an exceptional, unobstructed look across the sprawling Loch Lomond hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Beinn Os, which most likely translates as the 'mountain of the loch outlet'. This refers to its position overlooking the headwaters of the River Lochy, though an alternative, older interpretation suggests it may mean 'mountain of the elk'.
  • The summit offers arguably the finest perspective of its more famous neighbour, Ben Lui. From this vantage point, you can trace the entire line of Central Gully on Ben Lui’s eastern face, while the southern skyline is dominated by the distinct profiles of Ben Lomond and the Crianlarich hills.
  • It is almost universally climbed in tandem with Beinn Dubhchraig, connected by a high ridge. The transition involves crossing the Bealach Buidhe, which sits at over 600 metres and provides a dramatic, rocky corridor leading towards the steep final ascent of Ben Oss.
  • The mountain is primarily composed of mica schist; while this gives the hill its attractive, rugged texture, the rock becomes notoriously greasy and slippery when wet, requiring careful footwork on the craggier sections near the top.
  • The initial approach from Dalrigh is famous for a section of bog so persistent and deep that many walkers consider successfully navigating it with dry socks to be a more significant achievement than reaching the actual summit.
