About Beinn Dubhchraig

Often climbed as a pair with Beinn Oss, this Munro offers a characterful ascent through ancient Scots pine remnants at Gleann nan Caorann. The terrain is notoriously boggy on the lower slopes, eventually giving way to a broad, rocky summit ridge with commanding views over Loch Lomond and the southern Highlands.

Did You Know?

  • The Gaelic name Beinn Dubhchraig translates as 'Mountain of the Black Crag'. This refers to the steep, dark cliffs on the southwestern face above Loch Oss, which contrast sharply with the more rounded northern slopes used by most walkers.
  • The approach from Tyndrum passes through Coille Coire Chuilc, a Site of Special Scientific Interest containing an important remnant of ancient Caledonian Pinewood. These slow-growing Scots pines are some of the most southerly examples of the original forest that once covered much of the Highlands.
  • It is almost always tackled in conjunction with the neighboring Munro, Beinn Oss. The high-level col between the two, Bealach Buidhe, provides a welcome reprieve from the wetter ground found in the glens below.
  • The summit offers a spectacular perspective of Ben Lui’s massive eastern corrie, a view often considered superior to the one from Ben Lui itself. To the south, the peaks of the Arrochar Alps and the long stretch of Loch Lomond are clearly visible.
  • The initial boggy section through the woods is so famously deep and persistent that it serves as a literal litmus test for the waterproof integrity of your footwear. Many walkers' days have effectively ended at the ankles within the first twenty minutes.
