Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, translating simply as 'Red Hill'. While many mountains share this title across Scotland, this particular peak likely takes its name from the reddish tint of the local stone or the deep hue of the heather and bracken on its slopes during the autumn months.
  • Positioned on the northern shores of Loch Earn, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point for studying the massive northern corries of Ben Vorlich and Stùc a' Chroin, which dominate the skyline to the south.
  • The hill is frequently climbed as part of a circuit from St. Fillans, often incorporating the neighbouring peak of Creag Ghiubhais to create a substantial day out overlooking the Earn valley.
  • Given there are at least half a dozen prominent mountains named Beinn Dearg in the Scottish Highlands, bagging this one requires a careful check of the map to ensure you haven't accidentally driven to Ullapool or Blair Atholl instead.
