About Leacan Dubha

A stoic sentinel south of Loch Earn, Leacan Dubha is the Graham Top you climb when you’ve run out of Munros or simply enjoy being alone with your thoughts and several million stalks of heather. It’s rugged, pathless, and serves as a magnificent viewing platform for its more famous neighbors.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'The Black Slopes,' a description that becomes immediately apparent when you see its dark, heathery flanks rising above the southern shores of Loch Earn.
  • As a Graham Top of Meall na Fearna, it sits in a relatively remote pocket of the Trossachs, far removed from the busy tourist trails of nearby St Fillans.
  • The surrounding wild terrain was historically the haunt of Clan MacGregor outlaws, who used these unforgiving slopes to evade authorities and move stolen cattle across the glens.
  • From the summit, you are treated to a spectacular, unobstructed profile of the Ben Vorlich and Stùc a' Chroìn massif, which looks much more intimidating from this angle.
  • The ascent is essentially a masterclass in 'high-knees' exercise; if you finish the walk without being tripped by a hidden heather root at least once, you probably have the balance of a mountain goat or are lying.
